Indian economist and philosopher Amartya Sen (also Nobel Prize laureate, per other notes in this index)
 
defines "poverty" "in terms of the deprivation of the capacity to live a good life"
 
and broadens "the notion of 'development' beyond the economic to include expanding the capabilities of people, wherever they live, to participate in social life" (this reminded me of the many ways the film Urbanized underscores the importance of this point)
